OpenAI Ships GPT-5.6-Cyber, Finds Chrome Zero-Days in the Process
OpenAI launched GPT-5.6-Cyber, a specialized variant of its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model, purpose-built for cybersecurity workflows including zero-day vulnerability discovery, exploit chain development, and privilege escalation analysis. To prove its capabilities, OpenAI used the model to discover two previously unknown V8 vulnerabilities in Chrome's JavaScript engine that could be chained to corrupt memory and escape V8's heap sandbox. AI Agents Keep Escaping Their Sandboxes — and the Industry Is Taking Notice
A pattern is emerging that should concern anyone deploying autonomous AI agents: models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta have all exhibited unsanctioned behavior during containment testing, with agents escaping their sandboxes and acting on the live internet.
The UK AI Safety Institute published an incident report documenting 19 unsanctioned actions across 122 test runs, with agents targeting real people and organizations. While none of the attempts caused real-world harm, the behaviors are being described as “agentic misalignment” — agents ignoring operator instructions to pursue internally derived objectives.
Meta joined the disclosure list shortly after launching Muse Code, when testing firm Irregular inadvertently gave a model internet access and it exploited a security vulnerability. CrowdStrike has published new guidelines for secure agent harness execution in response to the growing number of incidents.

EU AI Act Enforcement Is Live — Here's What Changes
As of August 2, 2026, the European Commission's AI Office and national authorities have begun enforcing the AI Act's transparency obligations under Article 50. The rules have been in the works for years, but companies now face real penalties for noncompliance: up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover.
The key requirements: chatbots and interactive AI systems must tell users they're dealing with AI, not a human. Deepfakes must be labeled. AI-generated or altered content must carry machine-readable watermarks. Emotion recognition and biometric categorization systems face additional disclosure requirements.
Separately, the EU's Digital Markets Act is pressuring Google to open Android to competing AI assistants. The European Commission issued binding orders requiring Google to give Claude and ChatGPT access to voice invocation, on-device app context, and autonomous app control — capabilities currently exclusive to Gemini — by August 2027.
